Jeep Cherokee Sport Losing Power
Q. Hello, I am hoping you may know what is ailing my 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I have never had any problems with it, until today. Since I am a sales rep it is my bread and butter and my mechanic is out of town. The symptoms are as follows; It loses power, it will run fine for a little while and then say you are in a 45 mile an hour area and it will not even get up to 20 miles an hour.
When I press on the gas it tries and will power up for a little bit and then start struggling again to get the power. The last couple of spins around the block when I would press on the gas to try and get it to power up, it would make a clonking almost popping sound. I am hoping it is something simple? I would appreciate any advice?

A. It sounds like a clogged fuel filter. You didn't mention the milage but I'll bet a good maintenance checkup is in order. A new set of spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor, if applicable, air and fuel filters will do wonders for your engine and gas milage.
People, like sales reps, should shorten the maintenance intervals since they put a lot of miles on a vehicle in a very short time and usually not in the best of conditions.
