Ford Mustang Pops Out Of Gear Q. Dear Vincent, I have a 1985 Ford Mustang GT with a carbureted 302 5.0 liter engine and manual transmission (T5OD). My problem is when the car is running I can not get it to shift into first gear. It will go into second but it will jump out if I take my hand off the shifter. I have no problems with third, fourth or fifth.

I hope you can help me out with this because no one in my town seems to know what this problem might be.

A. The transmission has an internal problem, most likely with the synchronizers. They not only make shifting easier, but hold the transmission in gear.

The transmission needs to come out and get a complete rebuild.
