BMW 325 Instrument Cluster

Q. I have a 1987 BMW 325 6 cylinder, automatic, about 131,000. Dash problems: speedometer stopped working. I have replaced the circuit board for the cluster because the batteries were dead and service lights would not reset.

After I did this my temperature gauge would peg to hot when key turned on and gas gauge also stays at full when I know it is less than ½.They where working prior to this, It did cure the service lights though. I have checked fuses and the sensor for the speedometer, checks out okay. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Dan

ps: I am replacing the circuit board just incase it is faulty.

A. The fact the temperature gauge and fuel gauge are at their high limits indicates there may have been some wires pinched behind the Instrument Cluster. Another possibility is that the two mounting nuts are loose or missing.

Also, according to BMW, if replacement of the Instrument Cluster (E36) or Instrument Cluster Circuit Board (E31, E32, E34) should prove necessary, only Instrument Clusters or Circuit Boards of the same or later software can be installed.
