Pops Out Of Fifth Gear

Q. Hi Sir, I have a 1988 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder, FWD, manual 5 speed transmission, 160,000 miles on the vehicle, no ABS. When in 5th gear, when I take my foot off the gas, the car slips into neutral. Other symptoms: When I press on the gas and accelerate, I can feel the gear shift lever moving backwards slightly towards neutral.

If I take my foot off the gas extremely slowly and smoothly, it sometimes does not slip out of gear, and I can feel the gearshift lever move forward away from neutral. If I keep light forward pressure on the gear shift lever it does not slip out of gear. How do I fix and what might be wrong?

Thanks!
Doug

A. This is an easy one to answer Doug, although not an answer you want to hear. The cause of the problem is the synchronizers for fifth gear are shot. A transmission overhaul is the only way to fix it. I just got through replacing a transmission in the same car with the same problem.
