Volkswagen Jetta Rear Brakes
Q. 1997 Volkswagen Jetta. What is the extra step I have to do to replace pads? On the fronts all I had to do was to remove slider bolts pads dropped out reinstalled after replacing rotors. What is the extra stuff back there. I am somewhat proficient but never did Volkswagen brakes before.
RDUB
A. The rear caliper pistons don't squeeze back in. They are screwed back in. If you look on the face of the piston you will see two or four notches. There is a special tool that fits into those notches that will turn the pistons in.
Lacking this special tool, a spanner wrench can be used. Or a pair of needle nose pliers can be used. In any case lift up the dust boot with a small screwdriver. Then just run it between the dust boot and piston to be sure it is not stuck to the piston. If it is, turning the piston will destroy it.
