200-SX Airbag Light Flashing

Q. Dear Sir, I have a 1995 Nissan 200-SX, 1.6 liter automatic with 65,000 miles on it. It has an ABS, A/C, and cruise control, but I'm not sure about the rack or pinion steering. About a month or two ago when I started the car to go to work the airbag light began to flash intermittently.

The light has been flashing ever since. Ever since this light has been flashing my tachometer has been skipping. This seems to happen more often when I accelerate. I don't know if they work off the same controls or not, but I want my car to run good and since these problems have occurred the vehicle seems to be really bogged down.

I took it to the dealership to have a diagnostic test done. The gentleman told me that a code for the airbag sensor unit came up on his machine, but that was it. The cost of repair for the airbag is $730.00!!! Is there anything else I can try to fix the problem on my own? Can I purchase a used system? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time,
Kimberly

A. If he gave you a specific estimate with the part number, you may be able to get a used one from a junk yard. Other than that, the dealer is the only other place you're going to find it.
