Questions and Answers
To School Or Not To School?
Q. I am ASE certified in a couple of areas. There is a tech school in my area that offers an associate's degree program for Automotive. Do you think it would be worth it for me to go through this program or just continue getting ASE certified?
I want to open my own business in the near future and could really use some mentoring in this area. Can you recommend any web pages that offer transmission courses? It is the one area I am not familiar with.
Thanks,
DrewA. Let me relate a little story that will help illustrate a point I'm about to make.
A company was having a problem with one of their computers. They called a technician in and he examined the computer. After a couple of minutes he banged on the computer and it started working perfectly again. He gave the owner a bill for $300.00 and the owner promptly blew his stack. He wanted to know why the bill was so high and he wanted it itemized so he could see where the $300.00 came from. The computer technician gave him an itemized bill and it read:
Banging on computer ............................. $2.00
Knowing where to bang computer ..... $298.00 Total ................................................... $300.00As a mechanic we don't get paid so much for what we do, we get paid for what we know. So, in my opinion, the more we know, the more we're worth. A college degree, while not necessary to be a mechanic, makes you a better mechanic. Do I think it's worth it? Yes, I do.
I don't know of any place that offers a transmission course specifically, but most all schools include it in their curriculums.
