Mercedes Instrument Cluster

Q. Hi Vincent, I have a very small problem with my 1997 E320 Mercedes. One of my instrument Cluster Bulbs has burnt out and there are no technical manuals on newer Mercedes. Can you help me by describing how to remove the instrument cluster panel and replace the bulb?

Thanks,
Chee

A. If I told you that you have to physically yank it out, you would think I'm crazy, wouldn't you?

Well, guess what? That's just about how you do it. The instrument cluster is press fit into the dash. There is a special tool to remove them. They are a pair of hooks that slide between the cluster and dash on both ends. Then you wiggle the cluster out and hope you don't break it. Believe me, sometimes to have to fight the thing to get it out and it will smack the steering wheel and break the clear plastic face plate. Or the hook slips off and you rip out a piece of cluster.

You can get the tool at any Mercedes dealer.
