Subaru Check Engine Light
Q. Hello Vincent, I'm a new reader to your articles and I was wondering if you might have an answer to the following question. I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5 liter, with 64,000 miles. My check engine light came on several days ago and I am in the process of acquiring a scan tool to read out the code(s).
This morning I turned on the engine and noticed that the check engine light is now off. I'm still going to scan for stored codes, but will the check engine light turn itself off under certain conditions? It this how its logic operates?
Thank you,
BradA. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) provides a visual signal to the operator when a critical system is not working as it should. If the malfunction it has detected should clear up, the MIL will go off but the PCM will still retain the DTC. If the malfunction doesn't appear within 50 key starts, the code will be erased.
