Breaking Rocker Arms

Q. Hello, I hope you can answer the following question. I have restore the engine of a Ford Mustang 1964, everything was okay. We start the engine for the first time and one of the rocker arms broke. Get a new one and tried again but again one of the rocker arm broke. What could be the problem?

1964 Ford Mustang
289 (1968)

Thank you,
Rene

A. Was the second rocker arm the same one that broke before, or was it a different one? Did it snap in half? Did an end break off?

I guess the first thing I would make sure of is the base engine timing. It is likely the piston is up when the valve is trying to open. The cam is trying to open the valve and something has to give. In this case the rocker arm is all there is to give.
