Converting A Dodge Ram 1500 To 4WD

Q. Can a 4x2 Dodge Ram be converted to a 4x4 by switching the frame, and adding a transfer case? It's a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 regular cab with a 6' bed. It has a 5.2 liter 318 cid V-8, fuel injection, automatic transmission, 180,000 miles, ABS, P/S, A/C and cruise control.

Converting A Dodge Ram 1500 To 4WD

A. Yes, it is possible to do it. But why would you want to? On a vehicle with that many miles it's not worth the time and expense involved with doing the work.

In addition to the transfer case you will need to get a front differential, drive shaft, drive axles and front hubs. Then you need to run vacuum lines for the transfer case shift motor and the wiring for the 4WD switches.

I think you'd be better off trading this one in on a truck that already has 4WD.
