Chrysler Sebring Tachometer
Q. Dear Vincent, I have a 1996 Sebring JX Convertible with the V-6 engine and 40,000 miles. My problem is that the tachometer and odometer/shift indicator will simultaneously go out for a period of about two or three minutes then power back on simultaneously.
The odometer appears to be counting miles during this outage.
Some observations over the months:
1. Both tach and odometer/SI always come on when the car is first started, they go out after a minute or so of driving.
2. Both instruments go on and off simultaneously.
3. The outage is not responsive to bumps and vibration...i.e. no evidence of loose connections.
4. No other instruments or lights in the panel are affected.I am trying to avoid going to the dealer at this point and try to fix it myself, as I have been out of work for 6 months. I do have the Chrysler shop manuals, but am unable to pinpoint a common relay or module that would cause this. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
DouglasA. The one thing the tachometer, odometer and shift indicator share is they are all controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). The upside is the BCM has self diagnostics, the down side is you need a scan tool to access the trouble codes.
The Chrysler Collision Detection Serial Data Bus (CCD) supplies the connection between the Instrument Cluster (IC) and BCM. If there was a problem with the wiring, all the IC functions would be compromised. At this point the problem could be in the IC itself (more likely) or the BCM (less likely).
