Mazda Likes To Stall
Q. Dear Vincent, I'd firstly like to congratulate you on your site. I realize you must have little time, so I'll try and make this quick.
I have a 1981 Mazda 323 hatchback. It is a four-cylinder car. It has 5-speed manual transmission. I'm not sure about mileage or fuel injection.
Just recently, the car has been prone to stalling. I put a fair bit on pressure on the gas pedal before a take off the clutch now to stop it from stalling. It does not run smoothly in the lower gears (usually first to second, second to third). I also have the choke pulled completely out for most of the short journeys that I make. I know these symptoms could be due to several factors within the system of the car, but what would be the most likely reason for it's performance?
(The oil has been checked and looks fine and the car had been serviced shortly before the trouble began)
Thank you for your time,
ThomasA. Thank you Tom, I appreciate the compliment. Don't worry about my time, write me anytime you have a question.
You have a carburetor on that engine Tom. The most likely cause is a bad carburetor. Either dirt got into it and is plugging up the jets or you have a bad fuel cutoff solenoid. If the fuel cutoff solenoid is bad, that can be replaced separately. If it's internal in the carburetors, it's going to require a replacement or rebuild.
