Noisy Hardbody

Q. Vincent, I have a 1994 Nissan Pickup with a 2400cc 4 cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. When I start it up after it has been sitting all day or overnight, it makes a sound for several seconds until it develops oil pressure. The sound is kind of a grinding or growling.

I have had the truck for about three years and although it has always made some noise in this situation, it seems to be getting worse. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to make this better?

Thank you
Doug

A. The first thing I would do is to remove the valve cover and check the timing chain. Nissan had a problem with the timing chain guides breaking. This would make the chain loosen up and make all kids of noise.

If the guides are broken, and I think they are, there are improved replacement chain guides available from Nissan.
