Sentra Check Engine Light

Q. Hello! I have a 1994 Nissan Sentra 1.4 engine. It is an LE and has about 95,600 miles. Just recently the check engine light has been going on when I drive over 45 mph or a long distance (such as 10 miles plus). It doesn't usually turn on when I first start the car, but after I drive it for a while it does.

Sometimes, however, if it the temperature outside is really hot, the CEL is on when I start the car. I don't know if I should check the coolant or what? It runs fine, but the CEL concerns me. I was told by some friends that sometimes they are set to go on automatically to get a check up. I just got an oil change a week ago, so I don't think it is the oil.

Can you please help I don't want to take it to the dealer and get charged an arm and a leg if it is something minor I can do at home.

Thank you!

A. The problem with the Check Engine Light is that there are so many things that will turn it on. If you go to Diagnostic Trouble Codes - 1994 Nissan you can find instructions for accessing the DTCs and what they mean. Once we know what the code is, we can start looking for an answer.
