Jeep Wrangler Transfer Case Leak

Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla: I own a 1998 Jeep Wrangler 4x4, 2.5 liter 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission and 61,000 miles. Yesterday I had the transfer case replaced and today it is to be leaking what appears to be oil. The service center said they knew of no reason for this and that I should bring it in tomorrow. My questions are do you know what could be causing this and is it safe to drive until then?

Sincerely,
Kenneth

Jeep Wrangler Transfer Case Leak

A. The leak could be coming from a defective seal or case gasket. Someone will need to look at it to determine which it is.

Is it safe to drive? That all depends on the severity of the leak. I certainly would not take it on a cross country trip, but I don't think a short trip to the store for beer and chips will hurt it either.
