Questions and Answers

Mazda Speedometer

Q. Hi Vincent, Let me start of by saying that the auto repair section has really been quite helpful. A few days ago I changed the spark plugs which were really quite rusty and it was obvious they had not been changed by the previous owner. That same evening I realized that the Speedometer and the Odometer, which had been working perfectly fine before.

I have heard that the problem is probably a disconnected cable. This is my first car and I am eager to find out everything about it. Could you please advise me on how to inspect the problem and how to fix the problem. I read every speedometer advice section that I could find on your site and I couldn't find one that would correspond to my problem. Looking forward to your message.

1992 Mazda MX-3

Fuel Injection

A. You can trace the cable from where it comes through the firewall down to the transmission. If it is disconnected at the transmission, all you need do is screw it back in. Honestly, I don't see how changing the spark plugs could affect the speedometer cable. And speedometer cables just don't fall out. If you kinked the cable while changing the plugs that would cause the cable to break, in which case you won't see where it's broken.

Your car has a two piece cable. One from the transmission through the fire wall and under the dash. The other goes from under the dash to the speedometer. And if it is broken somewhere, I would think it's the transmission cable.
