Hard Cold Start
Q. I have a 1986 Chevy Camaro with a 6 cylinder 2.8 liter fuel-injected engine, manual transmission, and 240,000 km (rebuilt at about 200,000) on it. My problem is the car takes 5-20 seconds to start all the time except for two situations: the outside temperature is 5 celsius or below and the car has not been started for 8 hours or so, or the car was running in the last 10 minutes.
I suspect it may be the HEI module in the distributor or possibly the ignition coil (remotely mounted). I know it is not the fuel injectors because plenty of gas is reaching the cylinder; I know this because I can smell it really well when the car finally starts up. I also know it is not the pickup coil, spark plugs, spark leads, distributor cap, or the rotor, because these have been recently replaced. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JasonA. You need to start with a fuel pressure test. It may be leaking down when off and flooding out the engine. If it check's out okay, make sure it has good spark with a tester on one plug wire while cranking.
