Pontiac Grand AM GT ABS Light

Q. Hi, I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand AM GT. It's an automatic with a 3.1 liter V-6. 52,000 miles, and 4 wheel ABS.

I have recently moved to Minnesota. When I moved here, I had the brakes inspected. I was told that they would not be a concern for at least 15,000 miles. We have just gotten our first cold snap here and my brake light as well as the ABS light have come on. Nothing seems to be abnormal... braking seems to be the same. I'd appreciate some insight as I'm in college and would rather have some knowledge before I take it into to a new mechanic I don't know/trust yet.

Thanks, Eric

A. Welcome to the neighborhood. I live in S.E. Minnesota and it did get cold real quick. That's the good news, the bad news is it's going to get a whole lot colder before it gets warmer.

There are several things that will cause that light to go on. There are four wheel speed sensors, any one of which will turn the light on when they fail. Then there are pressure and ABS motor sensors that will trip the light. There is no real way of me knowing what turned on the light. You will need to take it in and have the codes pulled to see what has malfunctioned.

I would recommend a dealer until you get to know the neighborhood and find a good local mechanic.
