Mercedes Dash Problem
Q. The instrument gauges (tach., fuel, speedometer, oil pressure) on the dash are sometimes not working on my 1997 Mercedes E420. I checked all the fuses and they are all fine. Seems like there is a bad electrical connection!! Do you have any suggestions about what might be causing this intermittent problem and a solution?

TimA. My first guess would be the connectors in back of the instrument cluster or the printed circuit board inside the cluster. There is a special tool to remove the cluster from the dash, but it is not something that I recommend you do yourself. The cluster is very tight in the dash and the tools have a tendency to slip, breaking the cluster. I have broken a few myself and I don't know any MB tech that hasn't broken one.
If it is still under warranty, the dealer can replace the cluster and check the connections to be sure they are tight.
