Volkswagen Jetta Ignition Key Problem

Q. Hello, I have a 1992 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8 liter. It has a five-speed manual transmission with about 120,000 miles on it. Okay, so here is the problem: When the car is started the only way radio comes on is when you push the key in real hard and turn it away from you, and it won't stay on unless you hold it there.

Volkswagen Jetta Ignition Key Problem

I am assuming that the ignition coil is worn. Also, this may help: if the key is in and the door open it does not make the signature Volkswagen noise. But if you jam the key in really hard it does and as soon as you let go it dies out.

Thanks,
Ed

A. Most likely your ignition switch is worn out. These are normally dealer only items. Follow the procedures in the service manual, Haynes or Chilton's for replacement if you choose to do it yourself.
