Two Sending Units Bad
Q. Aloha Vincent, I have a 1990 Ford Ranger 2.3 litre 4-cylinder. fuel injected and a 1990 Ford Thunderbird 3.8 litre V-6 fuel injected. On both of these vehicles at different times, overnight, the fuel gauges have completely stopped working.
Other than checking the fuses, is there anything else I can check? Could it be that the float assembly inside the fuel tanks just stopped working all the sudden overnight? Or is there a sending unit or something inline to check? Mahalo for any input you may have.
Sincerely,
TerryA. If you ground the yellow/white wire on the Ranger and the fuel gauge goes to FULL, then you have a bad sending unit inside the tank. If it doesn't move, then the gas gauge itself is bad. You can do the same test on the thunderbird except ground the black/white wire at the tank.
