Toyota TPS
Q. 1985 Toyota Cressida, Engine size is 2.0 liter (1988cc) 6 cylinder. It's a manual 5 speed transmission. It has EFI fuel injection system engine model is 1G-E. I have few question to ask you.
1. How can I check my TPS (throttle position sensor). I think my TPS is out of its adjustment. Can you tell how to adjust these?
2. When I step into the gas the car started to hesitating (not want to run) until you increase the gas (little or WOT whole open throttle) or decrease the gas most of time it does not work in decreasing the gas. What you suggest?
Thank you,
ZeeshanA. Okay, this is how you test and adjust the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).
- Disconnect throttle position sensor wire connector.
- Using an analog ohmmeter and feeler gauge inserted between throttle lever and stop screw, take the following resistance measurements:
- With throttle closed, measure between terminals VTA and E2, Fig. 74. Resistance should be 200-800 ohms.
- With throttle lever and stop clearance of 0.0197 inch (.50 mm), measure between IDL and E2. Resistance should be 0 ohms.
- With throttle lever and stop clearance of 0.0354 inch (.90 mm), measure between IDL and E2. Resistance should be infinity.
- With throttle valve fully opened, measure between VTA and E2. Resistance should be 3300-10,000 ohms.
- With throttle valve in any position, measure between Vcc and E2. Resistance should be 3000-7000 ohms.
- If switch fails to operate as specified, adjust switch as follows:
- Loosen switch attaching screws, then insert a 0.0197 inch (.50 mm) feeler gauge between throttle lever and stop screw.
- Connect ohmmeter between IDL and E2 terminals.
- Rotate switch clockwise until ohmmeter deflects.
- Tighten attaching screws, then repeat step 2.
- If switch fails to perform as indicated, switch is defective.
Since a bad TPS could be the cause the problem you describe, I would test and adjust/replace the TPS before I got into anything else.
