Motor Home Starts Hard
Q. I own a 1992 Ford Motor home with the 460 engine that has 43M miles on it. When I try to start the engine when cold, I have to crank the motor over for 10-15 seconds. (it slowly seems to be getting worse) Once started the Motor home runs great, starts quickly after the first start even while its still cold, pulls the grades great with heavy loads behind it.
I've replaced all of the obvious tune-up parts recently but with no help. I was wondering if my fuel pump might be allowing the fuel in the line to gravity feed back into the fuel tank? Is there some sort of start up sensor? Any help would be appreciated.

A. When you say you replaced all the usual tune-up parts, did that include the ignition wires, fuel and air filters as well? These are all possible causes of a Hard Start/Long Crank condition.
Another possibility is a fuel pump check valve. One way you can test it is when you go to start it in the morning, turn the key ON but do not start it. When you hear the fuel pump shut off, do it again three or four more times. This will prime the fuel system and if it starts right up and stays running, you know the general cause of the problem. Then a fuel pressure test will narrow it down specifically.
