Dodge Ram 1500 DTC P1491

Q. I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab, with a 4.7 liter engine, automatic transmission, P/S, A/C, cruise control and 37.000 miles. The MIL came on and my local AutoZone rep told me the code came up as P1491, which in several publication, including yours, indicates "Rad Fan Control Relay Circuit". When I look under the fuse and relay cover, I find no such relay with that identification.

Question: Is there a different identification for this relay? If so, what is it. If not, where do I go next? I await your response.

Thanks,
Bob

A. Before doing anything, check with your dealer. This vehicle should still be under warranty.

You can't find the Cooling Fan Motor Relay because you don't have an electric cooling fan. The only cooling fan you have, besides the one on the end of the water pump, is the A/C condenser cooling fan. That relay is in the Integrated Power Module, under hood relay box.

There is no diagnostic procedure for DTC P1491 since you do not have that system. I would double check the code and if it is indeed giving that code, it is possible the PCM is damaged.

As I said, take it to the dealer since it should be under warranty. Even if it isn't, it's not that far out where they won't help you anyway.
