Ford Starts Then Dies

Q. I am working on a Ford E-150 van with a 302 in it and I am not getting a spark from coil until we let off the key switch. Then we see a small spark and engine wants to start but doesn't. Should also mention that the motor is just being replaced and are having the this problem on startup. I have tried coil, modulator. Any suggestions?

A. This is highly indicative of a bad ignition switch. Upon returning the ignition switch to "RUN", the ignition system shuts off and the engine dies. This problem is often caused by an internal failure of the ignition switch but may also be caused by defective wiring between the Ignition Switch and the Ignition Module.
