Leaking Grand Am

Q. Hi, My name is Felicia. About 5 months ago I bought a 1993 4 door Pontiac Grand Am. The floor of the car is flooded with water. I asked around and some said it was the heater core (EXCUSE ME IF THAT IS NOT RIGHT). The thing of it is the car only fills with water when it rains which indicates that that may not be the problem. I am not sure why the car is continually filling with water. When it first started it was only on the drivers side and in the back on both sides in the rear. I have also found wet spots in the trunk of my car. If you could, would you please give me some idea as to what this problem is and how I may go about correcting this.

Thank you for your time,
Felicia

A. Well Felicia, you're a little smarter than the people who suggested the heater core. If it was the heater core, you would have anti-freeze on the floor, not water. Anti-freeze is a little more stinky than water.

The problem is probably in the door seals. There are rubber weatherstrips that go around each door and the trunk lid that keeps rain out. If these strips are broken, cracked or have chunks missing, then water will get in. Another thing you can check is how tight the doors are closing. Look at the back of the doors. When closed they should be flush with the body. If the door is higher than the body, it may not be sealing completely and need to be adjusted in.
