Dodge Stratus 15" To 18" Wheels

Q. I have a: 2001 Dodge Stratus SE and I was thinking about getting some 18" wheels on it. One shop says that going larger than two sizes on your wheel can cause a problem in the transmission. Another shop disagreed. My car original size wheel is 15". Would going to 18" be a hazard on the transmission and should I stick to 17" or will it be okay? What is your expert opinion.

A. The key things to look for when changing wheel size is the overall weight of the wheels and tires combined, the final outside diameter of the wheels and tires combined (which could end up similar to original depending on the profile of the tires you choose) and clearance from wheel wells and suspension components. Too large of diameter or width can cause the tires to hit over bumps or turns etc.

Also, a change in overall wheel tire diameter can affect the accuracy of your speedometer readings. If the final wheel/tire combination doesn't interfere with wheel well or suspension components, are not heavier than your OEM equipment, then the worst of the impact will most likely be speedometer error.
