Ram Knock

Q. Engine is a 5.9 liter (360) V-8 automatic about 28,000 miles on it and the works, power locks, remote entry, cruise, A/C, tilt steering, ABS brakes etc.

The engine makes a knocking noise that sounds like a lifter is tapping. It does it loudest when I am passing someone and the engine downshifts. Doesn't do it starting from a stop. And is worse when I have a load in the truck, like my 4 wheeler. It doesn't do it when the engine is cold either. I have taken it to the dealer a few times and they tell me that it's normal for that engine to do that. I'm not experiencing any apparent loss of power or anything. It just sounds really bad. Is this really a normal thing? I had a 1997 Ram (exactly the same as this one) and it didn't make any abnormal noises at all. I especially don't want to run into any problems after the warranty runs out!

Thanks for the help,
Mark

A. Mark, in my opinion, no noise is "normal" in any new car. That goes for tapping, whistleing, singing or humming.

I would suggest posting this question in my Auto Repair Forum in the Chrysler folder. We have a gold certified Chrysler technician who is very good and will be able to give you much more information about this problem.
