Smoking Trans Am

Q. Hi Vincent. I have a question about my 1994 Pontiac Trans Am. I have seen smoke coming from where the steering wheel meets the steering column. It is wires frying most likely. It's a thin line of smoke that I have seen on three separate occasions, but does not occur every time I drive it.

I tried to have my local repair shop look at it and they said they wouldn't touch it. They said it is a problem they heard of from others and I must take it to the dealer. Is this a recall? Have you heard of this before?

Thanks much,
Erick

A. As far as I know there is no recall for this. Many GM cars have had smoke come out of column but never seen any that caught on fire. I think there may be too much grease on the turn signal switch contacts. Most smoke problems that I've worked on have been fixed with a new turn signal switch.
