Ford Aerostar Power Steering Pump
Q. Good Afternoon Mr. Ciulla, I have recently aquired a 1992 Ford Aerostar 4.0 liter V-6 minivan. The power steering pressure line was leaking where the hose connected and the pump went out. I need to replace the pump and line and I need a little advice. It appear that I will have to remove the air conditioning unit to get to the P/S pump, and I see 4 bolts atop the A/C unit that seem to attach it to the P/S pump.
I don't think I will have much trouble replacing the pump, however this will be my first adventure with power steering and i'm not sure what to do after replacing the pump and the line. Any advice you could give me would be great. I can't seem to find anything online about the Ford P/S systems.
Thank You,
CarissaA. You shouldn't need to remove the A/C compressor, the power steering pump itself can be removed independently from the compressor. Recommend that you invest in a maintenance manual for your vehicle which will give you step by step instructions.
Removal and Installation
- Drain fluid from pump reservoir, then disconnect pressure and return lines at pump.
- If applicable, disconnect pressure switch electrical connector, then remove switch from line fitting.
- Loosen drive belt adjusting bolt at idler pulley, then remove drive belt from pump pulley.
- Remove oil dipstick tube, as required.
- Remove power steering pump bracket support brace, if equipped.
- Using steering pump pulley remover T69L-10300-B or equivalent, hold pump and rotate nut counterclockwise to remove pulley. Do not apply in and out pressure on pump shaft as internal thrust area damage may result.
- Remove pump to support bracket retaining bolts, then the pump assembly.
- Reverse procedure to install. Fill pump reservoir, start engine, then turn steering wheel lock-to-lock to remove air from system.
