Micra Dies On The Road

Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, I would be grateful for any suggestions on my problem. I have a 1987 Nissan Micra 1.0 liter, 84,000 miles, manual transmission, automatic choke.

My car runs smoothly, however, it has a very serious stalling problem. It starts great, always, and generally idles ok but might die, hot or cold. Hot or cold, I can usually get out but as soon as I get to third gear it wants to stall the whole time and does so when I depress the clutch and let off the accelerator. From that point it wants to stall all the time until I finish the journey and I have to use momentum to keep restarting all the time as I roll along after releasing the accelerator coming up to junctions. There's no hesitation it just cuts out.

My first thought was blocked carb jet but I've blown the jets I can find three times, replaced fuel filter, idle-compensator valve, checked vacuum hose connections, taped around the carb base gasket in case there's a leak, checked the fuel pump ( seems ok but perhaps a bit iffy ) and the points, plugs, leads etc are all clean and have always been, changed condenser. The float chamber fills to the right level and the air filter's clean.

My guess is that it's a blockage in the carb somewhere that I can't find but do you have any other suggestions before I start parting with money I don't have?

Thanks,
Kevin (possessor of a great car most of the time.)

A. That fuel pump being a bit "iffy" could be your problem. At idle and low speeds it may be pumping the volume of fuel you need, but at higher speeds it's just not up to the task.

What's happening is at the higher speed the engine uses all the fuel in the bowl and when that runs out, it dies. Basically it's using more fuel then the pump can supply. When the fuel pump can catch up and fill the bowl again, you can drive some more until the cycle starts over again.

The first thing I would do is replace that fuel pump and I think that will solve your problem.
