Mondeo Sputters And Dies

Q. Hi, I have a 1994 Ford Mondeo 1600 LX I think it is injection. The trouble is starting in the morning, it starts fine, but after about 20 seconds it splutters and cuts out. It starts again after about 10 seconds then again cuts out.

The third time it starts and runs perfectly, and starts fine for the rest of the day, until the next morning. You just have to be patient, and allow the three starts. Hope you can help.

Thanks very much for your help.
Mike

A. The first thing I would want to do is perform a fuel pressure test. It sounds like it is losing fuel pressure over night. In a case like this, I would hook up my fuel pressure tester, run the car for a while and shut it off. Then I would check the pressure the next morning and see if I still have pressure. If I don't then I can narrow it down to a fuel pump, fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator.

One way you can test it is when you go to start it in the morning, turn the key ON but do not start it. When you hear the fuel pump shut off, do it again three or four more times. This will prime the fuel system and if it starts right up and stays running, you know the general cause of the problem. Then the fuel pressure test will narrow it down specifically.
