Stalling Beretta

Q. I had a question about my car. It's an 1988 Beretta 2.8 liter V-6 with 116,000 miles. I live in Iowa and it just recently has got cold (don't know if this has any effects). Just the other day I was driving home and when I stopped a stop light my rpm's started dropping until the car stalled.

I still drove it home but had to have foot on gas when slowed to stop. The car still starts but the car will stall once I put it in gear. I was wondering what you might think is wrong with it.

Thanks,
Scott

A. When I moved to Minnesota, people here told me IOWA stands for... well, never mind.

If the Check Engine light did not come on, then first thing to check would be the idle Air Control Valve. It is located on the throttle chamber. You can remove it and the large air intake hose and clean everything out with carb cleaner. Chances are this will fix the problem. If not the IACV may be bad and would need to be replaced.

I would also suggest looking for any vacuum leaks which would cause the engine to stall at idle.
