Pontiac Grand Am Almost Dies At A Stop

Q. Thank you very much for helping all that ask. I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am SE with 3.1 liter V-6 engine and automatic transmission. It has 109,000 miles. The transmission works fine half the time. At other times, starting from a stop sign or red light, it shift into second good but then jumps to third and overdrive within seconds.

Then when that happens, at the next stop, it doesn't downshift until it bogs the engine almost until it stalls, but downshifts before that happens. It makes no difference if the A/C is on or not. A mechanic over the phone said from my description of the symptoms, it could be a solenoid at the side of the transmission. What is your opinion?

Thanks for your help,
Lenny

A. Could be a Torque Converter Control (TCC) solenoid problem if it's an electronic transmission. Have it scanned for transmission codes first.
