Ford Escort Transmission Fluid

Q. I have a 1999 Ford Escort LX, automatic transmission. I have 63,000 miles on the car. My problem is three months ago my service engine soon light came on. I took the car in and had it checked and they told me it could be a transmission problem. The mechanic said that, there was a bulletin that said this may be fixed by simply changing the fluid.

I had the fluid changed and the light had gone out. Around 2,000 miles later the light had come back on. The light now goes on and off periodically every 200 to 300 miles. I also recently checked the fluid and noticed it was of a burnt color. Please help!!

A. I would have the codes pulled out of the computer. That is the only way we're going to get a handle on this problem.

If they did not drain the torque converter, there will be, about, 6 or 7 quarts of transmission fluid in the transmission when the fluid is drained. After the engine us started and the transmission fluid circulates, it will look like it was never changed.

If there is no drain plug on your torque converter, then a transmission flush is the only way to get all the old transmission fluid out. Be sure that Mercon transmission fluid is used.
