Taurus Hard To Start

Q. Good Day, I'm hoping that you may help me with a problem I have with a 1994 Ford Taurus. Sometimes the car will start fine and other times the only way it will start is if you hold the gas pedal to the floor and turn it over. Then it will usually start okay, again for a while.

It happens whether the car is hot or cold. It has also been going about 25 mph with my foot off the gas. It doesn't seem to be revving high when in park or in gear. Also, if you give it a quick shot of gas, it will hesitate for a second before it revs up. It is a 3.8 liter engine.

Thank You,
Glen

A. I don't know how much I can help you Glen. Holding the pedal to the floor and having it start makes me think that the engine is flooding for some reason. When you hold the pedal to the floor while cranking, the system shuts down the fuel delivery and just lets air into the engine. This is designed to clear a flooded engine. I would suggest a fuel pressure test to see if any of the injectors are leaking down into the intake.

This problem might take a bit of diagnostic time to find, especially if there are no DTC's stored in the computer.
