Grand National Blew A Gasket?

Q. Maybe you will be able to help me with a problem I had. The other day I was driving my 1987 Buick Grand National and as I came of the highway it felt like I had no power when I would step on the gas, very sluggish.

I pulled over and lifted the hood, and a very loud squealing was coming from down near the water pump area. I removed the oil cap and white smoke poured out of the engine. The oil and engine coolant levels was full though. I was told by a mechanic that the bottom half of the engine may be seized and that if that is true that the turbo has to be replaced also, even though I got a new one last year? Just thought you might have a little Grand National knowledge.

Thanks,
Colt

A. Well, if the engine was running when you opened the hood, that's a pretty good indication that the engine is not seized.

I would think it's more likely that you blew a head gasket. And I don't see why a turbocharger has to be replaced if any major engine work is done. As long as it's in good shape and the oil seals are not leaking, I don't see any reason not to reuse it.
