Volkswagen Jetta GL P/S Problem

Q. Hi, I have a 1990 Volkswagen Jetta GL and I find that on most rainy days the steering wheel is very hard to turn. I think water gets into some part and causes this but I have no clue. I don't have this problem in dry weather. I have checked the power steering fluid level and it is just above the minimum mark.

Here are the other details about my car:

  • 1990 VW Jetta GL
  • Engine size: 1.8
  • Automatic transmission
  • Mileage: 142K
  • Fuel injection
  • No ABS
  • No A/C etc..
  • Power assisted rack and pinion steering

Thanks very much,
Mahesh

A. The only thing I can think of that could possibly be affected by the weather is the P/S belt. The rest of the system is sealed and there is nothing the weather can affect.

At this point, all I can suggest is to replace the P/S belt and make sure the belt tension is correct. Also check the P/S pump bracket to make sure it is not broken. That was a known problem with the Jetta.
