Questions and Answers

Mustang Wheel Wobble

Q. I have a low speed wobble that seems to come from the left front tire. It responds like there were waves in the road but it seems to be only from left front. Could it be the tie rods or a loose boot?

Second question, I have had trouble with my car overheating, I replaced the thermostat and the water pump myself and now it no longer over heats but now on the highway around 55 mph I loose power, when I back off the gas and slowly nurse it back to speed there is a clunk sound then the power returns. Have I blown a gasket or is something else happening?

My car is a 1988 Ford Mustang Convertible with a 2.3 engine.

A. It is possible that the tie rods are loose or worn out. It is also possible you have a bent wheel or a bad tire. The easiest way to determine that is to rotate the front wheels to the rear and the rear wheels to the front. If the problems goes away, you know it's the tire and or wheel. If it is still present, then you have a steering problem and it needs to be checked out.

As for question number two, I would have to drive the car to see exactly what it is doing. It is possible you have an air bubble in the cooling system that would cause an intermittent running problem, but as for the clunk noise, I can't even begin to guess what it is without hearing it.

To properly refill the cooling system, disconnect the heater hose at the water outlet connection on the thermostat housing. Fill the radiator until coolant is visible at the connection in the thermostat housing or the coolant level in the radiator reaches the radiator cap filler neck seat. Install heater hose and tighten hose clamps. Refill the radiator to approximately one inch below the filler neck seat.
