Toyota Celica Won't Start 1 In 15 Times

Q. Hello, I have a 1986 Toyota Celica GT. The car doesn't always start!!! One every 15 times, when you turn the key there's nothing. However, if you open the hood and hit the starter, someone hitting the starter and someone turning the key, it starts right up. We have replaced the starter with a rebuilt one, the alternator and the ignition switch.

Sometimes you can start the car 15 times in a row with no problems and sometimes it just doesn't start. We have tried to fix this problem, but nothing works! What do you think?

A. If you have to smack the starter to get it to turn over, the starter is no good. Yes, you said you replaced it, but that doesn't mean it's good. I would return that starter and get another one.

Another thing to check is the small black wire at the solenoid and make sure it is clean and tight. If it is clean and tight check for power with a test light when the key is in the START position. If there is no power you can use this wiring diagram to backtrack and find the problem.
