240SX Digital Dash

Q. I was driving home from work today and all of a sudden my digital speedometer in my 1992 Nissan 240sx went out. It was blinking on and off for a couple weeks but didn't seem to bother me. Now it doesn't come on at all. I tried the reset button but that didn't help. Then I checked all the fuses and they were fine as far as I could tell. Any advice?

Thanks for your time,
Brian

A. If the whole digital dash went out, then the problem is with the digital dash power supply. Since the neon segments in the digital dash need 120 volts to light, there is a converter inside the dash just above the gas pedal that supplies the 120 volts to the dash segments. There was a problem with the power supply where a defective solder joint on the power supplies circuit board would cause to unit to go inoperative. I would have to guess this is the most likely problem.

If it is just the speedometer that went out, then there may be a problem with the printed circuit board behind the instrument cluster. If that's the case A Nissan dealer will be able to confirm this and replace the circuit board.
