Ticking Saturn

Q. Hi, I have a 1996 Saturn SL1. Not sure of the engine size, it's an automatic with about 65,000 miles on it. It has fuel injection, ABS brakes, P/S, A/C and C/C. I have power steering although I am not sure if it is rack and pinion.

My question is this; I get a strange ticking noise coming from the back when I apply my brakes. It only happens when I am slowing down. Someone mentioned it could be the CV joints. Can you tell me whether I should take it in to have those looked at? Seems to me to be the rear brakes since it only happens when I start to break.

Since I am a female, and have gotten ripped off by mechanics before, I wanted to make sure to at least have some idea as to what the problem is before I take it in.

Thank you so much for any help you can give me and I sincerely appreciate your time.

Tamara

A. I would definitely recommend getting it looked at. It would be difficult for me to determine what is causing the noise, not having heard it.

It is possible that it is a CV joint is making the noise. Generally a CV joint will make clicking noise when turning. It is also possible, and since you hear it when you apply the brakes more likely, that it is the brakes. Either a broken anti-rattle spring or a broken brake pad or shoe.

Personally I think any mechanic who takes advantage of a women should have his nuts and bolts stripped. What you can do is take it to one shop and let them diagnose it and give you an estimate of repair. Then take it to one or two more shops and get the same thing. Then you can decide if you're getting the straight story. If you are still in doubt, write me and I will be glad to help you out.
