Chevy Cavalier Killing Batteries
Q. Dear Vincent, I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier. Lately, my problem has been the battery dying when I leave it sit for a weekend sometimes. I have had the alternator and the battery checked and they are fine. Can you please tell me if the clock in Chevy Cavilers is always on even when the car is turned off.
Mine stays on even when the car is off, that's what I think the problem is. What do you think?
A. That does sound like your problem. Is it the factory radio? You really need to do a parasitic load test on the battery to determine what exactly is running it down. If there is a parasitic load, you can pull fuses one at a time to determine what circuit the draw is on. Starting with the radio fuse should take the draw down to less than .15mA. Also check for a broken trunk light. These have been known to have broken mercury switches on the trunk lid hinge and just hang down keeping the trunk light on all the time.
