Sucking Transmission Fluid Out Q. Mr Ciulla, Great site. I really appreciate your content on about.com. I do have a clarification question. I simply want to change my transmission fluid without opening the transmission fluid pan under the car. I do have an idea. My idea is that I have this shop vac that I'll be able to suck out the transmission fluid via transmission fluid dipstick and filler tube.

Is this okay to do? Would I harm any other part of the engine? Would I suck out any other fluids? Your help is appreciated.

A. Sure can. No problem at all. But why dirty your shop vac when you can go to an auto parts store and buy a regular pump for this purpose?
