Chevy Cavalier Backfiring
Q. Hello again. I own a 1988 Chevy Cavalier 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine Thanks for the tip and I replace crankshaft position sensor and it is still backfiring. So could it be the timing chain after all? Or could it be the computer?
Thanks
A. I don't remember the initial problem or previous repairs made but I'll give a whirl. A backfire through the throttle body usually means a problem with ignition timing. This could be a burnt spark plug wire end, very common. When you look into a boot, if you see ash like material inside, this would be bad. It should be a shiny metal terminal. A bad coil or ignition module can also cause this. Second could be a broken valve spring. This could easily be checked by pulling the valve cover off and looking at all springs. A valve spring would backfire all the time, not just hot or cold. Good luck!
