K Car Surges

Q. I have a 1989 Plymouth Reliant K. 4 cylinder 2.2 liter engine. automatic transmission. The car starts, idles, and accelerates ok, but at a steady speed it hesitates or lurches, (if you will). I checked all vacuum hoses and were ok, also for loose bolts around the air intake (it has fuel injection), then noticed black smoke from tail pipe when gas peddle is pressed full, or goosed, also bad gas milage.

Checked computer codes and came up with a 51, possible oxygen sensor. I checked all connecters and wires and grounds. I am stumped, any ideas?

Thanks,
George

A. A code 51 is: Oxygen feedback system stuck at lean position. This means, basically, that your O2 sensor died. Replacing it should fix the problem.

FYI... there was a recall, number 637 issued in April 1995. This involved replacing the PowerTrain Control Module (PCM). I would go to a Chrysler dealer and check to see if it was done and if it wasn't, you can schedule it to be done.
