Dodge Dakota Cruise Control Switch

Q. I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota, V-6. I sprayed electronic cleaner under the left hand cruise control switch on the steering wheel to get the switch to engage better. And it did. However it appears that I blew out the bottom of the internal switch and the rubber boot that goes between the toggle switch and the electric portion.

I popped the switch off and looked at it however it looks like the rubber boot has lengthened and I cannot get it t stay in place now. So I thought I'd replace it but want to know if I can remove the two screws holding on the horn/air bag cover with out a problem. I'm planning on disconnecting the battery, is there any thing else I should do. I'm concerned about the air bag discharging.

Thank you for your time,
Rob

A. The airbag system is a sensitive, complex electromechanical unit. Before attempting to diagnose or service any airbag system or related steering wheel, steering column, or instrument panel components you must first disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable.

Then wait, at least five minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further system service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to do this could result in accidental air-bag deployment and possible personal injury.

Once the system is deactivated, you can safely remove the air bag module from the steering wheel. When you lay it down, lay it down with the metal frame side down, well away from the work area.
