Chevy S-10 Backfiring And Dying

Q. I have a 1986 Chevy S-10, 6 cylinder auto, about 164,000 miles. Fuel injected with no A/C or cruise. When the truck gets up to high speeds for a reasonable length of time, or I drive it for more than about thirty minutes, sometimes it will backfire and die. And thereafter will not get up past about 30 mph until it is allowed to cool.

On occasion it will not start immediately afterward. I have replaced the distributor cap, spark plug wires and plugs. It is not overheating. I have had it in two shops on four separate occasions, and they are never able to duplicate the problem. The only faulty piece found has been the speed sensor, which they replaced. Help!!!

A. Seems to me that if it's backfiring, you are loosing spark somewhere. Possibly a bad distributor module, pick-up coil, coil or a cracked magnet on distributor shaft.
