Rebuilt Engine Sucks Gas
Q. Hi. I have a 1996 Ford Windstar 3.8 liter engine, automatic transmission, A/C, ABS and P/S. The head gasket blew at 217,000 kilometers (134,837). I had the engine completely rebuilt at an engine shop; it now has 2,000 kilometers (1242) on it.
At this point in time the gas consumption is excessive approximately 2.5 times what is was prior to the engine being rebuilt.
The engine runs fine, the O2 sensors were checked out and are okay. The mechanics seem at a loss as to why it is consuming so much gas. He seems think that fuel pressure might have something to do with it. Any suggestions / leads would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your attention.
LionelA. It is not unusual for fuel consumption to be high on a newly rebuilt engine. As you drive and the engine breaks in, you should see a marked improvement in fuel milage.
